There might be new update everyday in the huge world of Backup & Recovery but it is important to note that the requirements of a data center are very comprehensive. There are data centers which have moved into complete virtualization whereas there are datacenters with physical and legacy file level backup. Vladan Seget’s article, Vembu Universal Explorer – Free Tool talks about granular recovery of different application objects. The tool can be used to restore Active Directory (AD), SQL, Sharepoint, Exchange Server objects. The free tool can restore individual items of Microsoft’s products from Image level backups (for physical servers) or from backups from virtual environments (vSphere, Hyper-V).
The article begins with a statement from the author that the current scenario is very vulnerable with the advent of malware, spyware and other malicious softwares. There are other factors like system crash, corruption as well which apparently demands the granular recovery of data. Vembu Universal Explorer is comprehensive enough to handle multiple applications with relevant steps for the same. The tool also offers recovery path based on the option chosen. The author then provides the information on the installation and the interface screenshot of the tool. Then the author provides individual features of Vembu Universal Explorer in different applications like Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint Server, Microsoft SQL Server and so on.
Vladan states that the installation process is simple and in his lab, he was able to quickly test the tool and specifies that SQL Express 2014 and Outlook needs to be installed, together with .NET framework. The author then provides the system requirements for the tool namely .NET 4.0 or higher, SQL Server 2014 express and Microsoft Outlook 64-bit 2010 or 2013. The author also explains the workflow of the tool citing an example of an AD object from a Vembu Backup and concludes by talking about another free tool, Desktop Image Backup thereby creating image level backup for your endpoints (laptops, desktops etc…) Finally the author ends the article by quoting the products of Vembu and giving a very brief overview about all the products.
