Microsoft is known for its constant feature updates and in keeping their customers satisfied with upgraded user experience. Taking this undeniable fact into consideration, its recent big release – Windows 10 Creators Update, offers loads of feature improvements which includes enhanced Hyper-V changes as well.
Let’s traverse down for detailed updates and enhanced features that are incorporated in Creators Update:
- Easy creation of Virtual Machines
- Checkpoint and Save State on Virtual Machines
- Resizing Virtual Machines Dynamically
- Adjusting Zoom Level for VMConnect
- Significant NAT Improvements
- Improved Memory Management
Quick Create:
Microsoft have added a minor improvement to the Hyper-V manager in Windows 10 through which users can now create a new Virtual Machine very quickly. This feature named Quick Create will use little amount of information and will provide you a new Virtual Machine in ready state instantly. Initially, Quick Create Feature had issues mostly pertaining to default virtual machine settings which they have fixed in this release.
Quick Create Feature will now use these default settings :
- Generation: 2
- Memory: 2048 MB to start, Dynamic Memory enabled
- Virtual Processors: 4
- VHD: dynamic resize up to 100GB
Checkpoint and Save for nested Hyper-V:
Microsoft had introduced Nested Virtualization (Hyper-V running inside another Hyper-V). Despite it becoming a very popular feature, it came with a lot of limitations initially. They have worked to improve the compatibility, performance and feature integration. Users can now take checkpoints and saved states in a Virtual Machine which is acting as a Nested Hyper-V hosts.
Dynamic resize for VM Connect:
In case you are using Hyper-V’s Enhanced Session mode which lets you resize VMConnect window, you can now additionally resize your Virtual Machine dynamically. This feature is available to the Virtual Machines that support Hyper-V’s enhanced session mode alone which are:
- Windows Client: Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and later
- Windows Server: Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 and later
Zoom for VMConnect:
If your Virtual Machine cannot be read or if you want to configure your zoom limit, you now have the option for adjusting the Zoom Level. From the View Menu, set your required Zoom Level.
Networking improvements (NAT):
During the Windows Containers initial release, Microsoft had discovered networking differences between Linux Containers and Windows Containers. In the latest Creators Update Release, there are two significant improvements with regard to NAT.
- Developers, on a single host can now use Multiple NAT networks. VM’s, containers and emulators from a single host can now utilize NAT functionality
- Using Overlay Network Driver, Developers are now able to build as well as test their applications directly from the container host. This Overlay Network Driver is provided by Virtual Filtering Platform Hyper-V switch extension. Additionally direct access to container using Host IP and exposed port is also possible
Memory Management:
Hyper-V now utilizes memory very effectively by allowing the operating system to prune the memory from other applications and uses all the available memory. This comes as a welcome change because Hyper-V used to allocate memory in a conservative manner. The available memory that is shown in the task manager gives you a clear idea of how much memory will be available for starting the Virtual Machine. The available memory that is displayed is an accurate value.
