“VMware Cloud on AWS “an on-demand service that is sold, delivered and supported by VMware, lets you use the same VMware tools such as vSphere, vSAN, NSX and vCenter in the AWS Cloud Environment thus excluding the need to purchase any new hardware. It has been less than a year since a partnership was officially announced between VMware and Amazon which has now been made available on AWS. With the main motivation of providing easy Cloud Management, the partnership between the two was announced in the VMworld Conference held in Las Vegas.
So what exactly is VMware Cloud on AWS ?
VMware Cloud on AWS is a service through which users can run their applications across vSphere based environments. By using VMware Cloud on AWS, users can now expose their applications to new and broad range of AWS Services such as Compute, Analytics, Databases, Security, Application Services and so on.
VMware Cloud on AWS integrates your storage, network and VMware tools that is optimized to run on an dedicated, hybrid, elastic AWS infrastructure. With this service now, it is simple and feasible for IT administrators to manage their cloud resources.

AWS Integration :
- Connectivity between VMware Cloud on AWS and the Customer’s AWS account can now be enabled. This is used solely for authorizing access to AWS Services and the resources present
- This feature also provides high bandwidth and improved network connectivity between VMware Cloud on AWS directly to AWS Services
Workload Portability :
- Workload Distribution can now be optimized within a VMware Cloud on AWS environment using VMware vSphere DRS and vMotion
- Businesses now have the option to choose depending on their needs where they want to run their application. The biggest advantage VMware customers have is that, they need not choose between cloud deployments or on premise deployments thereby experiencing improved flexibility and scalability without eliminating portability
Zero Infrastructure Lifecycle Management :
- While users will control the managing and operating their respective application, rest of it will be taken care by VMware. VMware is the single point of contact to the users incase of any queries, guidance or support
- Users can now initiate SDDC Cluster ( Software – Defined – Datacenter ) on AWS Cloud through web-based APIs. SDDC software updates will be delivered by VMware
With VMware establishing agreements with some of the world’s leading Cloud Vendors such as Microsoft, IBM and Google, this agreement with Amazon is a great move for those who needed access to their existing tools and simultaneously benefiting from Amazon’s AWS Services. This will be viewed as a huge win to VMware where they can further continue to assert their dominance in the Cloud Infrastructure.
