VMware has brought forth drastic improvements and upgradation in the recent event VMworld 2017 conducted by VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and VMware COO Sanjay Poonen, which was held at Las Vegas. Although VMware has been partnering with a number of public cloud providers, the highlighted news is the revelation about the VMware Cloud on AWS (Amazon Web Services). Other than this, the next big announcement for the cloud partners was the Pivotal Container Services (PKS), where K stands for kubernetes. It is said that the VMware’s Container Service should be viewed as the key feature for this year. Let us look into the outline view of the vSphere Integrated Containers.
VMware vSphere Integrated Containers
VMware vSphere Containers (VIC) became available from April 2017 which provides developers and IT users with the containerized applications on a common platform. This helps the developers attain flexibility, ease and speed from containers whereas the IT gets the secured and management capabilities of the VMs in the vSphere. vSphere Integrated Containers includes the following three components.
Container Engine (vSphere Integrated Container Engine)
It is designed in such a way that the developers who are often encountered with Dockers can easily run containers on vSphere.
Container Registry (Project Harbor)
It securely stores and distributes the container images with built-in RBAC and image replication.
Container Management Portal (Project Admiral)
This portal helps in managing the container repositories where it consists of the hosts and container instances.
Introducing Pivotal Container Service
The newfangled Pivotal Container Service is introduced to deploy Kubernetes in a vSphere environment for multi cloud enterprise and service providers. VMware and Pivotal in partnership with Google Cloud are to launch the Pivotal Container Service. It helps in the communication of the public cloud and the datacenters. VMware’s NSX (Network virtualization and Security Platform) is inbuilt in PKS and by using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Service, integrate the cloud services with the applications in the containers. Kubernetes, Pivotal, NSX and all the VMware components are integrated with one another to provide better services with high availability and monitoring to keep the production environment more flexible.
It is informed that the customers are provided with the latest version of kubernetes available to them to maintain a compatible Google Container Engine. The pros of using Pivotal Container Service:
- Higher Developer Productivity/li>
- Faster Time to Value
- Enhanced Operational Efficiency
To conclude with the overall announcements made at VMworld 2017, VMware has uniquely delivered the successful containers services to the customers. This might be hugely popular in the near future in the world of virtualization.
