VM/Disk Exclusion
VM (Virtual Machine) and Disk exclusion refers to the process of excluding or exempting specific virtual machines or disks from backup operations. This is often done to optimize the backup process and to avoid backing up redundant or unimportant data. The exclusion process typically involves specifying certain virtual machines or disks that should not be included in the backup process.
Any of the following options can be selected as per requirement for disk exclusion
- Include all disks for backup. No disk should be excluded.
- Include only system disks for backup. Exclude others (Typically Disk 0:0).
- Exclude selected disks from the backup. The disk types that can be excluded are IDE, SCSI and SATA .
VM/Disk Exclusion Benefits
Better Backup Performance
Excluding unimportant data from the backup jobs can significantly improve backup performance and reduce the time it takes to complete a backup.
Reduced Backup Storage Requirements
This will also reduce the amount of storage space required for backups.
More Efficient Resource Usage
By excluding data that is not essential for recovery purposes, backup resources such as bandwidth, storage space, and processing power can be used more efficiently.
Improved RTO
The time it takes to recover the essential data in case of a disaster can be significantly reduced enhancing the RTO.
Compliance
Some industries and organizations have regulatory requirements to exclude specific types of data from backups to meet compliance policies. Exclusion will help ensure complying with regulations.
