If I had told you last decade that “Virtualization” would become one of the most spoken topic and most of the organisations would consider virtualizing their environments, you would have laughed at me. But such has been the impact virtualization has created this decade that it has become commonplace in computing. In the present scenario, businesses that thrive on business continuity have increased tremendously. While you ponder on what exactly are the right Hyper-V backup strategies present, there are several challenges IT administrators face. Understanding the difficulties users had to face, Vembu offers Vembu BDR Suite – a universal backup and disaster recovery solution. Along with several other backup softwares available in the market, users have seen Vembu evolve as a reliable, resilient, innovative and a complete user friendly backup and recovery solution. With regards to Hyper-V, I am going to brief you in this blog on the features we at Vembu offer which makes us unique from the rest.
While discussing about Hyper-V backup, Vembu has developed its own proprietary driver which makes Hyper-V backup much more easier and reliable. The driver, combined with VSS Technology – A Microsoft technology, backs up the Hyper-V virtual machines in an effective manner when compared with other software vendors.
Automated Backup Verification :
Vembu offers you backup integrity, a feature which most of the backup softwares compromise upon. Virtual machines that are backed up in the Hyper-V environment are useless when users cannot restore them during times of disaster. Just for this purpose, Vembu VMBackup will automatically boot the Virtual machines backed up in the Hyper-V environment and take a snapshot of the booted Virtual Machine in the latest state. This snapshot will be sent to the backup admins through email. It is solely an automated process and can be triggered automatically once every day or after completing each backup schedules. So how does it work ?
This process is a three-tier backup verification process which ensures data is not lost post recovery. The process is subdivided into three portions which are explained below individually.
Boot Check :
The virtual Machines that are backed up will be booted instantly as a virtual machine on either Hyper-V or KVM just by reading the backup storage. A snapshot of the recently booted virtual machine will be clicked and sent to the backup admins who can view it in the “Image Verification Report” option. This process thereby gives the user an idea whether the OS Disk is bootable or not.
Mount Check :
This test is used for checking whether the disks that are backed up in every individual Virtual machine and physical machine is mountable. The process is carried out by Vembu BDR server by mounting individual disks on the Vembu BDR server’s disk management.
Integrity Check :
Vembu checks the integrity of each and every file in the backed up Virtual machine and also physical machine by using “Windows Check Disk Utility” also known as “chkdsk”. It is generally a system tool found in Windows environment which verifies the integrity of files.
Quick VM Recovery :
Have you suffered a major disaster or has your system crashed ? Quick VM Recovery is the option you have to opt for. This feature will restore your Virtual machines instantly by accessing the backup data from storage repository. What Vembu BDR server does here is directly reading your backup data from the storage repositories that is in compressed and encrypted state. You can carry out restoring your backed up VM’s in VMware, Hyper-V and KVM. So how is this process carried out ? Let us have a look.
After each and every backup schedule is completed, Vembu will create VHD, VHDX, VMDK, and IMG format disks. These disks will be virtually created, i.e., they don’t consume any additional storage. By using the virtual files such as VHD/VHDX, a VM can be created and booted on the Hyper-V host.
Vembu CBT Driver for high-performance :
Before getting into the mechanism and working of Vembu CBT, let me explain its need and what Vembu CBT is basically so that you would get an idea about it. CBT a.k.a. Changed Block Tracking is a tracking mechanism which tracks down the modified data alone during an incremental backup. Vembu has developed its own CBT driver to track the modified data. So what is the use of this mechanism ? This will aid in completing your incremental backup in just minutes thereby saving your time and will transfer only the modified files to storage repositories which saves you storage space as well as reduced internet bandwidth.
Agentless Hyper-V Backup :
Vembu broke the traditional old fashioned method of backing up virtual machines using Agent by introducing Agentless Backup which has replaced the necessity of installing any agent inside your virtual machines.
Virtual machines that are running in the Hyper-V server can be backed up very quickly from the Vembu BDR server directly, hence ensuring that business continuity remains unaffected. Backups can be configured from the Vembu BDR server with several options such as VM/Disk Exclusion, Retention policies, Application Aware settings, Flexible backup schedules etc.
Best Backup for Hyper-V : Why Vembu – Summary
The above mentioned features are just a glimpse of what Vembu has to offer to its customers.
