Simultaneously executing multiple backup tasks, commonly called “Parallel Processing” is a great new feature that comes with the recent release of Vembu BDRSuite v5.0.
This feature helps with:
- Drastic reduction of overall backup execution times
- Increased throughput
- Efficient/optimal utilization of system resources – RAM and CPU
If you are an IT administrator, who is keenly looking to reduce the execution times of your company’s backups, with an aim to free up your system resources expeditiously for high priority business objectives, then this new feature is for you.
How to use this feature?
In the BDRSuite Backup Server console, click on VMware/Hyper-V/Windows tab.
Goto Backup > Configure Backup Settings > and select Concurrent Backups
You will get the below screen:
Below two concurrent backup parameters could be set:
Option 1: Maximum number of concurrent backup tasks in the BDRSuite Backup Server
- Simply put – this parameter specifies the maximum number of backup tasks that your BDRSuite Backup Server can handle at a time
- You can set this upto a value of 999
- As an IT administrator, you can set this value, entirely based on your existing system resources – CPU and Memory
- For example, if you are setting this value to 100 based on your system resources, the backup server can handle a maximum of 100 backup tasks concurrently
Option 2: Maximum number of concurrent tasks per backup job
- In Simple terms – this parameter determines the max number of backup tasks that an individual backup job can handle concurrently
- This comes in handy when you have 100s of Virtual Machines/disks to be backed up inside a cluster (VMware ESXi or Hyper-V) or multiple physical windows machines and you don’t want to go with the usual serial processing (taking backups one by one)
- This is a granular setting, where you have the privilege to set any value from 1-99
- This value has to be set lesser than the maximum concurrent tasks the backup server can handle (which was set using Option 1)
- The Total number of Backup jobs that can run simultaneously is determined by dividing Option 1 / Option 2. For example,
- This will definitely save a lot of time, by efficient utilization of your existing system resources
A Note on System resource utilization
- BDRSuite recommends a minimum of 8 GB RAM with a Quad core processor for BDRSuite Backup Server deployment
- Normally, 4 GB RAM will be utilized to run the BDRSuite Backup Server and database services
- We recommend considering approximately 500 MB RAM for each active backup task. For example, if you want to run 8 concurrent backup tasks in your BDRSuite Backup Server, you would need to ensure you have an additional 4 GB to accommodate those backup tasks
- To avoid significant CPU usage during active backup progress, the BDRSuite Backup Server machine should be assigned with enough CPUs/vCPUs
- Normally, one vCPU can handle approx 8 concurrent backup operations like read/write
