One of the biggest concerns of current businesses is to tackle the growing size of data on their servers. Scaling out the storage of your infrastructure will be of great ease while balancing the storage of the backed up data. Thus, you will be able to configure multiple backup jobs on a single scalable repository. This will eventually decrease the cost for data protection and backup storage hardware as well. Legacy backup solutions have the problem of listing storage columns with more unused storage spaces, leading to wastage in storage hardwares. Due to lack of repository space, there are high chances for random backup failures too.
This blog section will help you with efficient storage management using the Backup Storage Pool feature of the Vembu BDR Suite. Users will be able to group multiple storage repositories into a single entity to ensure that there is no wastage in the disk space of any particular volume. Even if you happen to run out of free space for storing your backed up data, you still can add an additional local or network drive to the existing pool to make sure that the data gets backed up successfully.
Creating and managing the storage pool:
- After installing the Vembu BDR setup, users would have to create their storage pool for their backup data after logging into it. By default, you will be able to configure the storage repository for your backup jobs during the installation setup. However, in order to scale out the existing default repository, you would have to click on the storage management option under the management tab to configure the storage pool
- Among the volumes that are listed below, choose the ones you would want to create a storage pool with. Note that, here you will be able to create a storage pool with heterogeneous storage devices like local drives, NAS(NFS & CIFS) and SAN(iSCSI & FC)
- It is to be noted that users will be able to run backups only if the storage repository is configured. Before you configure backups, make sure that the free space in the created storage pool is a minimum of 4GB in the Vembu BDR Server and 8GB in the Vembu OffsiteDR server, so that the configured backups do not end up getting failed
- When there isn’t enough free space in the existing storage pool, you can add additional physical or network drives by clicking on the “Edit” option that is present along the storage pool that the user has created
- Users can also store their backup data in a specific volume of the created storage pool based on their requirement. For example, if users would want to distinguish the storage repository between the data that is present on their VMware/Hyper-V virtual machines and Physical Windows Servers, they can do it by clicking on the “Add Storage Pool” option while configuring backup for their Windows Server or their VMware ESXi/Hyper-V host
- Individual physical volumes or network drives that contain the backed up data cannot be deleted. The one option to clear out the used storage repositories is to delete them all. The following window will help in executing the same
