You can export the EC2 instance that is previously migrated from a VM, using the AWS Management Portal plugin which is integrated to your vCenter.
To know how to integrate AWS Management Portal with vCenter, refer to our previous blog by Clicking here.
After the successful plugin integration, you will be seeing “AWS Management Portal” plugin getting appeared on the home page of your vCenter portal.
Exporting Migrated EC2 to VM involves two sections
- Preparing for Instance Export
- Exporting migrated instance
We will be explaining each topic in detail
Section 1: Preparing for instance export
- Open AWS: VCenter Plugin setup console, Click here
- On the “AWS Management Portal for vCenter” page, select “Configure Instance Export”
- Click “Create New” if this is your first time or if it’s not, s3 buckets will get mapped to it automatically
- Configure a “Bucket Name” and choose “I agree that AWS Management Portal for vCenter may do the following on my behalf:” option and select “Create” button
Section 2: Exporting Migrated instance to VM
- From the vCenter portal Click “Home” button and Select “ AWS Management Portal”
- On the “Dashboard” traverse to “Region->Environment-> Imported Instance-> Instance”
- On the “Getting Started Page” select “Export instance to S3” button and follow the onscreen instructions
- On the successful export initiation, it will give you an export id, make a note of this id for future references
- To monitor the running export job, you can check Ec2-to-S3 Migration tab
- After the successful export – OVF file is created in the provided S3 bucket
- To download the exported OVF file, do the following
- Open AWS S3 console – Click here
- Select the bucket that contains your exported OVA file, say for example you have named your bucket as “vmexport” and the region you have choosed is “us-east-1” then you have to choose “Export-to-s3-vmexport-us-east-1” bucket
- Select the OVA file, and choose download
- Host downloaded OVA to your vCenter or ESXi to launch virtual machines
Conclusion:
Thus exporting a migrated EC2 instance to on-premise is simple with AWS connector and vCenter server.
