BDRSuite and Synology NAS, what a better combination. With 16 years of IT experience, I’ve used many different products, but these two have been my top choice for the past two years for backup and storage. They work smoothly, securely, and without headaches.
In this article, I will show you how to integrate BDRSuite with Synology NAS and store your backups there. To demonstrate how to do it, I will use the Synology DS923+, a flexible storage platform for small businesses. It offers read/write speeds of up to 592/562 MB/s, along with support for network speeds up to 10 GbE and NVMe SSD slots. You can add up to 4 bays, scaling up to 60TB.

Prerequisites
To integrate Synology NAS storage with BDRSuite, there are a few prerequisites on both BDRSuite and Synology NAS. First, you need to have BDRSuite installed on your machine. Next, decide what you want to back up (e.g., VMs). Once that’s determined, you can add a backup destination pointing to Synology.
Step 1: Create a backup share on Synology NAS
I assume you’ve already integrated Synology NAS into your infrastructure and that it is accessible via the network. The first step before integrating Synology NAS with BDRSuite is to set up the backup storage: the destination network drive where BDRSuite will store backup copies (e.g., copies of the VMs).

To do this, you will need to create a network shared location or volume where your backups will be stored. You can find detailed instructions on how to create a volume in this article How to Create a Backup Share on Synology NAS.
Step 2: Integrate Synology NAS with BDRSuite
We are ready to proceed. Both BDRSuite and Synology NAS are set up and ready to be integrated.
- Login to your BDRSuite using admin account
- Navigate to Infrastructure in the main menu, and then click Backup Repository > Block Storage
- Click on Create New Block Storage Repository
- Enter the repository name and select Simple as the repository type. Additionally, you can set the storage repository as the default repository. In my case, it is not
- Click Add Network Drive
- Check I understand that if the above recommendation are not addressed, it can result in serious data loss, and then enter the following:
– Drive path
– Username
– Password - Click Create
- The backup repository has been successfully created and can now be used to store backup copies, as shown in the screenshot

Click Save

The final step
Everything is ready, and you can proceed with the next step: creating a backup policy where you define what you want to back up and where you want to back it up. The network shared storage we created in this article will be used as the destination.
