Hyper-V failover cluster is a set of Hyper-V servers/nodes(with similar hardware) that are linked to one another and work in union resulting in high availability of application/services to any business. If there is a disaster or shutdown in any of the cluster node, then all the failover resources running in that node will be migrated to one, among the other cluster node automatically with minimal downtime.
Why / who needs Hyper-V failover cluster:
- Businesses with high user traffic 24/7 and businesses that primarily depend on data transactions for effective functioning will benefit with Hyper-V failover cluster
- The main advantage of using Hyper-v Failover cluster is that when a host machine running a virtual machine shuts down, it fails over the control to the next available node in the cluster and make virtual machines in the cluster highly available
- Businesses requiring a foolproof business continuity model can have Hyper-V failover cluster to have a very minimal downtime
- Unlike other failover plans, additional nodes can be easily added in Hyper-V failover clusters and can be done even at server uptime without any disruptions caused to services
- In a Hyper-V cluster, a maximum of 64 nodes(host machines) can be included where about 4000 virtual machines per cluster and 1024 virtual machines is permitted
- Failover process can be configured by users
- Prioritizing the order of failover switching (i.e)to which node the failovers should be carried away
- No of allowed failures in a particular period of time (i.e) if failures occur more than the allowed count, the machine will remain in failed state
- Failover cluster also avails storage migration and live migration features
Requirements:
- Hyper-V failover cluster is available for windows server 2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2 and requires x64 based processors
- All the nodes of the failover cluster should be under the same domain
- A cluster shared volume(CSV) is one of the storage management which acts as a common storage source for nodes added in the cluster
Vembu BDR suite avails the feature to get your cluster shared volumes backed up, so that your business critical data will stay alive forever.
