Sander Martijn’s article, “Having a look at Vembu BDR,” is an interesting and brief take on Vembu’s flagship offering, Vembu BDR Suite. It is one among the multiple articles and reviews by independent analysts and tech experts who have lauded the simple nature of the solution for complex requirements of the data center. Also it comes a single edition software for all types of businesses.
The author in his article begins by stating that the solution is used by both the big, medium and small businesses, offering agentless backup and replication for both vSphere and Hyper-V platforms. Application aware processing is possible when using agents with RPO & RTO lesser than the industry benchmark of 15 minutes. The solution can be installed as an executable file and also available as an appliance. Sander comments that the installation part is pretty straightforward and while installing, the author recommends to go for custom installation as the customized install offers some options that, 9 out of 10 (eq. database and backup location) one is likely to change. Then the author provides post-installation steps in a precise manner and for testing purposes, he had added a vCenter server. At the later part of the article, author Sander provides the steps for creating a backup job. The “application aware” option allows for some extra options when dealing with applications running within certain virtual machines. And the “Advanced Retention” radio button makes it possible to use a GFS (Grandfather-Father-Son) schema.
Finally, the author presents the summary of his observation and he points out that the installation and configuration part was really good with the web console being easy and manageable. The author believes that Vembu BDR is worth the time to check out and if one is looking to try out a new backup solution, then Vembu BDR could be what one needs.
