VMware Backup and Restore feature provided by Vembu BDR is an effective solution to recover data against system crashes and to restore the Virtual Machine completely. The restore process results in a virtual machine that includes both the original state as well as all the files and data that make-up the virtual machine, including the representation of disks, memory, and other devices, such as virtual network interface cards.

Instant Recovery of Virtual Machines to ESXi/vCenter:

With this option, users can directly restore the Virtual Machines that were backed up, to an ESXi server with the user specified VM name and datastore name. Restored VM in ESXi server will work in near continuous manner within a few seconds or minutes based on the size of vmdk size. Here is a pictorial representation of it:

Download image file of VM(s):

This can be used to restore the VM as an image file. This option is useful when the VM needs to be restored in a remote location. In this option we can download the image file in three formats as VMDK,VHD,RAW. In each case, we describe briefly on what transpires.

VMDK:

VMware’s virtual machine image format. Image can be converted into  VMDK format and launched as virtual machine on a VMware host.

VHD:

Hyper-V virtual machine format. Image can be converted into VHD format and launched as a virtual machine in a Hyper-V environment.

RAW:

Raw image format. The Raw image can be launched as a virtual machine in KVM in Linux environment.

This type of restore is also a three step process,

  1.  Select the version to restore.
  2.  Select the format to download the image file and select the VM(s) to restore.
  3.  Enter the target location to download the image file.

2

Finally click on “Restore” button.

Instant Boot:

This Instant boot option is used to boot the backup instantly as a virtual machine in the backup server. If the backup server is Windows, then the image file is launched as a virtual machine in Microsoft Hyper-V environment. In case of a Linux backup server, the backup image is launched as a Virtual machine in KVM.

While restoring we need to follow the following steps:

  1.  Select the instant boot software – for windows it will be Hyper-V and for linux it will be KVM.
  2.  Select the version to restore.
  3.  Select Disk/Drive to restore.

3

Finally click on “Restore” button.

With the subsequent release of the product, we’ll have these additional features included.

File level restore from VMware backup:

In some cases we need only some files from VMware backup. In that cases instead of restoring the entire VM by using this file level restore option we can restore only that particular files.

Disk level restore from VMware Backup:

In Disk level restore option we can restore the particular disk from the VMware backup.
