The backup theory always leaves an end user with so much of confusion. The very first question arises from all people’s mind is where I need to backup my data?. The answer is available in the question i.e the location which one you feel more comfortable to move your data wherein it can be local environment, offsite environment or cloud environment. So you should analyse your data i.e how important it is, how regularly we use it and how data loss impacts us. If you found the right answer then the confusion will be faded out from your mind.
The above picture shows you the common locations where you can backup your data. The backup server may be onsite, offsite or cloud. Our main goal is backup and recovery and so we should analyse our local environment and other related areas. List of things we need to analyse before choosing the environment:
From our end,
- Size of backup data: The approximate size of total data, you are going to backup to the backup server.
- Network availability: The kind of network you have needs to be analysed and plan should be made accordingly. If you don’t have any internet connectivity in your network, then you can’t go with cloud backup solution.
- Network bandwidth: Bandwidth is the bit-rate of available, used to find the speed and durability of your network.
- Backup duration: As per the availability of bandwidth the backup duration may vary time to time, but we have to control and keep it stable.
From backup server end,
- Recovery Time Objective (RTO) : The total time taken for the data recovery from backup server and reboot your business activities after any kind of disaster.
- Recovery Point Objective (RPO): The number recovery points available for particular period of time. The time gap between the recovery point should be short. It is healthy to recover your very last data before the system has crashed.
Choose your environment:
- Onsite: The data of your computer, server and laptops are backing up to the local environment, which means the backup server should be in the part of your local network.
- Offsite: The backup server deployed in another network, which is connected with your network through switches and hubs.
- Cloud: The backup server deployed in cloud environment and the connection will get established while you need to do backup and recovery of your data.
