The concept of backup really makes sense as it helps in the situation of a disaster. But you may ask why a replication is necessary? A backup server can be located within your network to save a copy of all the data of your organisation. However, if a mass destruction (like a fire accident) occurs, even your backup server will be lost and the effort and investment will go in vain. So it’s better to replicate your data to a safer place, let it be a datacenter elsewhere or in a cloud so that all your backups will be replicated periodically and a safe copy will be available in the cloud.
Why Vembu CloudDR?
Vembu CloudDR is an add on product that comes with Vembu BDR that helps you replicate your backed up data in simple steps. It also gives flexibility in backing up your data and provides various choices for replication.
Replication type:
Vembu CloudDR uses snapshot replication to copy the contents of a database from the local server to a cloud.
What is a snapshot?
A snapshot is a copy of the virtual machine’s disk file in VMDK format captured at a specific timestamp. These files are used to restore a VM of a particular point in time whenever a failure occurs. Whenever there is a change in the disk block, a snapshot is created and the changes are updated. If there is a disaster, you can simply failover to a secondary location while the production environment also gets restored. When a snapshot is reverted, current disk and memory states are deleted and that snapshot becomes a parent snapshot for that VM.
Is replicated data safe and secure?
Definitely, as Vembu CloudDR uses AES encryption, your data will be highly encoded at rest and on the fly. Your data will be authentically replicated without any changes even though it is encrypted.
Will there be a difference in the backup and replicated data?
Undeniably, there won’t be any difference in the backed up and replicated data as all the changes will be replicated in the backup server and all the users from anywhere will be able to view the consistent data.
Will there be a downtime during replication?
Vembu CloudDR uses live migration technique, so that the data from your backup server will be migrated to Vembu Cloud that leverages AWS infrastructure for it’s cloud. Since it is going to be a live data transfer, you data will be transferred instantaneously to the cloud without any interruption to the business.
Even in case of a disaster, the whole backup server can be rebuilt entirely within few minutes and timing solely depends upon the region.
Access data from anywhere:
Vembu CloudDR is available for the US, EMEA and APAC regions. You can either keep your replicated data in the local region or it can also be globally redundant. Anyhow, it is going to be your choice to have the replicated copy in your region or to have it geographically redundant.
Is replication expensive? Not at all. Since this is an add on product of Vembu BDR, the cost is highly affordable at just $0.20/GB/Month and after that, you will be paid only as per usage every month.
As how a backup is very important, a replication also plays a vital role for an organization. With backup and replication, you have several copies of your data that is saved locally or globally.
