World Backup Day (WBD) as a concept started in 2011. Reddit users discussed the essential need for backing up data and decided to declare the day before April Fool’s Day as the perfect time to backup files. That’s how WorldBackupDay.com was created and started to spread the word among netizens.

In 2017, we’ve seen the incidents of ransomware continuing to rise, thus explaining the importance of backing up and securing your data.
Kroll Ontrack ran a survey to find that most business and consumers were making use of comprehensive backup solutions for their data. Around 33% of the 1000 people surveyed were from North America, Europe and Australia reported experiencing data loss.
During the time of disasters, majority of the companies who suffered data loss, had a backup solution in place. Backup failed to work properly for about 25 percent of the respondents. Of the users who experienced data loss and had access to a backup, 67 percent said they were able to restore most of their data, while another 13 percent were able to restore 75 percent of the data. 12 percent reported corruption of backup data. Less than 3 percent were able to restore only a small proportion of their backups.
Understand that it’s always better to pay for backups than to pay a ransom:
Ransomware is everywhere, the recent being Annabelle Ransomware. If an organization or an individual falls victim to one such attack they could be asked to pay a hefty ransom to get all their data back. But If we have our information and files backed up, we can have the peace of mind that our data is safe and that one can avoid any trouble associated with ransomware. Not just ransomware, even from human errors.
- Don’t rely only on file sync backup to protect data: One must look to services that provide automated, instant and continuous backup
- Backup your data, just do it: Most people don’t realize that when they do not back up their data they are putting their professional and personal data at risk
Ransomware will get more advanced by each passing day, so data backup is a key method of protecting all the valuable data and to stay secure.
Follow the 3-2-1 rule for a more protected tomorrow:
- Have at least three copies of data
- Store the copies in two different media (disk or tape)
- Keep one backup copy offsite
Choosing a comprehensive universal backup solution catering to the backup, recovery and disaster recovery needs of diverse IT environments is vital, also make sure it provides flexible deployment options like offsite, cloud, on-premise and hybrid cloud. A backup solution should also take care of storage needs of a business apart from ease of backups and faster restores. A solution should primarily be simple for installation and configuration to drive business continuity for an organization.
