The digitally connected world was all set ablaze when the ransomware attacks happened. Not one but many in a row. While WannaCry and Petya proved to be biggest of them all. The attacks made the data inaccessible leading to a business halt. Earlier the attacks were completely money oriented but Petya attack had some other plans- No options for recovery. The systems were infected through administrative tools and also used the EternalBlue vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows. Even after such huge attacks, October which was marked as the cybersecurity awareness month witnessed another ransomware termed as Bad Rabbit which was struck due to the download of a virus injected adobe flash drive. An embedded extension list was used to encrypt the data using public RSA key. The code analyses show the similarity of the binaries used in these attacks. Cybersecurity experts have their own evaluations and analyses on these attacks but the matter of concern is, people aren’t still aware of these cyber attacks. It’s high time where steps have to be taken towards educating people about these attacks. There is no room left for second thoughts as the attacks are becoming bigger and better every day.
