It’s December, snowfall across the streets usher in the month of joy and celebration. Bells and chimes ring in rhythm with Christmas carols. The only confusion is to select the right Christmas presents for our loved ones. While the glowing lights decorate the entire town, ornaments and tinsel on our Christmas trees decorate our home; It is indeed a month of fun and frolic. Having mentioned these, December isn’t only about fun. It is also a time to realize and scale our efforts we have put in towards achieving our goals. We not only look back on the journey to remember the steps of achievement we climbed, but also find the odds which pulled us down away from our goal so as to prepare the rest of the journey in our pursuit of achieving our goals.
On the same note, here we recap the top 5 trends that changed the backup and disaster recovery in 2014 thereby enhancements can be made for the future. Lets get started!
One Stop Solution:
Recent survey by TwinStrata about backup strategies revealed that about 54% of the respondents rely on data backup techniques more, compared to last year. As the demand for Backup and Disaster Recovery increases, there is a significant effort taken by the vendors in standardizing the deploying methodologies. One stop solution is a key outcome of standardization, most of which customers prefer. It provides a single window to monitor the activities and simplifies the maintenance and the costs involved.
Virtual and Cloud based backup solutions:
There is notable change in handling business data storage. The survey by TwinStrata also highlighted that 50% of the respondents store data on premises while 24% prefer cloud. On-premises backup is done through virtual environments nowadays rather than the legacy environments. Virtualization helps in efficient management of storage on-premises with less cost. Considering cloud, scalability has been one of the prime reason that customers choose cloud over other options. On the other hand, security remains the major concern for the “No cloud” respondents.
Smart Techniques:
New Techniques are deployed today in terms of storage. Techniques like deduplication (Eliminating storage of redundant copies of data) and Automated Storage Tiering (Storage feature that dynamically moves data to meet space and optimize performance and cost) not only provides enhanced solution but also provides smart solution.
Access through smart devices:
Mobile and smart devices became indispensable today. Vendors provide options for customers to access their services through hand-helddevices via App’s designed across multiple platforms like android, IOS and windows. It not only makes the process simple with a few touches but also allows customers to access on the go.
Discrete Vendor options and solutions:
There has been a significant increase in number of solutions and vendors that customers may find it difficult to choose one for their requirement. Even though vendors provide a discrete set of solutions today, most of them employ customer support team to clarify this confusion and find the right solution.
With all these trends in actions, the success rate has increased to 95% compared to last year which was 80% according to the business value analysis market research report. There is areas of improvement in terms of backup failures due to connectivity issues and equipment failure. Enhancements can be made in the storage devices like HDD, SSD and flash for efficient storage. Security is one hurdle to be addressed in cloud. Believe backup and disaster recovery can getthrough these odds in 2015. Happy New Year!
