A new year resolution is followed as a tradition by several people all around the globe as means of self improvement. Nevertheless, we all believe that the ‘New year, New me’ concept will work out mostly and is considered to bring in lot of positive vibes to those who believe in change. We all have our own resolutions list up and ready for the new year 2017 and while, I was wondering what the IT administrators have on their bucket list, here’s something, I came up with.
- Believe in yourself, more: An IT administrator’s job is hectic as any normal day would consist of performance checks, security patch checks and much more. Any outage or security threat can bring down a business and so, the job of an IT/System administrator is equally important, if not more. Hence it is imperative that an IT administrator should consider themselves the spartans of their company
- Bring in more security: Let’s accept that fact that as new technologies come in, security issues do creep up. Data and systems have become vulnerable than ever before and it is important that the system administrators are vigilant enough to face any security threats. Apart from the current security measures, an added layer of security is always better
- Learn, Learn, Learn: Automate, start working on some projects, learn some language that can be beneficial to your job. Bash, Perl, Ruby, Powershell or Python and few more that can bring more efficiency in your job. New certifications like CISSP, VMware, MCSE can always add more value to your credentials and so it’s always better to add them in your ‘to-do’ list
- Document everything: Be it a project you are working, or a minor task that has been assigned, documentation is important. Use cases always come in handy and thus documentation plays a pivotal role.
- Know your infrastructure well: Now, this is important. A well planned infrastructure drives away most of the worries of an IT administrator. Your data center might be sophisticated or might have a simpler IT setup, there should be a plan for everything. It might have the physical servers or the latest virtualized servers, investigate how every element of your environment works, especially the stuff that you didn’t build yourself. You may find opportunities to fix security or inefficiencies, and then integrate new technologies within. If you have the opportunity to simplify your Backup & DR plan, you can think about using a single solution for all your backup requirements, be it virtual or physical or legacy.
- Think about costs: Ideally, costs play an important role in case of small & medium businesses as they have a challenge of ensuring sufficient IT infrastructure as well as keeping their IT costs on check. Here, IT/system administrators need to make sure that they have a backup solution which is affordable but does not compromise on security or business availability. If an IT administrator is able to find a solution like that, it is a win-win situation for him.
We wish everyone who’s reading this article, Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year and hope that the new year brings in all those, you have asked for..
