Ever since the Vembu BDR Suite Free Edition was announced last week, there has been a buzz in the market since the free edition is considered one of the best tools for firms which wish to experience the Backup & Recovery mechanism of Vembu BDR Suite for no cost. Vladan’s article, “Vembu BDR Suite Free Edition – Details and Compare” is an interesting and brief take on Vembu’s latest offering. The article begins with the author commenting on working with Vembu BDR Suite Free Edition and how after the trial period of 30 days, the free edition gets activated with limited features. The author then lists out the limitations of the free edition and illustrates a screenshot from the lab showing a Hyper-V 2016 VM being backed up by Vembu BDR and states that the edition backs up virtual environment like VMware and Hyper-V and also specifying the different transport modes like SAN, Hot-Add and Network based mode with the software switching automatically to the best possible mode during a backup job, to ensure that the most appropriate method is used.
When it comes to physical environment support, the free version for physical Windows system can also do full backups, but on the other hand, one can have the Bare metal recovery option which allows to recover the backed up image data to a new system via Vembu Recovery CD(It’s free to download). The author mentions that Vembu plays an enterprise card as enterprises can have heterogeneous environments. Rightly so, the edition supports both physical and virtual environments filling up the gaps created by other backup vendors. Valdan also states that operating through a single console for various environments is a huge advantage for IT admins and Vembu BDR Suite does offer that.
Vladan then lists the other added features of Vembu BDR Suite v3.7.0 along with the free edition which are multi-tenancy support for service providers, performance enhancements and better user experience. The author then comments on the restore part by stating that he Vembu quick restore is fast because the backups for VMware, Hyper-V and Physical Windows Disk Image backups are stored at block level in a neutral format. (in a DB) by presenting those backups through the Vembu Virtual Drive. This allows to instantly restore any incremental backup in any virtual disk format including VHD, VHDX, VMDK, VMDK-FLAT or IMG. Additionally, Vembu BDR suite has traditional recovery features such as Instant Granular Recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SQL, SharePoint and Active Directory or Cross Hypervisor Migration (V2V) where one can migrate a VM from VMware to another Hypervisor as one has those virtual disk files ready.
