There’s been a growing buzz on the much anticipated new free version of the Vembu BDR Suite v3.9.1. While a few enterprise businesses are aware of deploying a potential data protection solution to their infrastructures, a huge chunk of about 58% businesses aren’t prepared for data loss and don’t have a data protection solution either.
Most Small and Medium Businesses tend to forgo the concept of investing in a backup software for data protection as they run their businesses on a shoestring budget. Or they are completely ignorant about it. What they later realize is, the cost that the aftermath of a disaster would incur to their business is expensive multi folds than they would have invested in a backup software.
Now, there arises a need for a free solution that would address the needs of businesses that don’t have a backup strategy in place as well. This new upcoming free edition of the Vembu BDR Suite aims at delivering just that. Read on to know what this free edition will have to offer and how the business of any size can gain the most out of it!
What’s in store with the Free Edition:
The free edition of the Vembu BDR Suite is free forever and works seamlessly with a set of critical functionalities that are part of the paid Enterprise edition.
Now let’s get started with knowing the features of the free edition that will prepare your data center for Business Continuity.
Unlimited Agentless backups for VMware and Hyper-V:
Vembu VMBackup offers Agentless Backup solution to protect the VMware vSphere ESXi & vCenter VMs and Microsoft Hyper-V VMs.
This has reduced the efforts involved in installing the agent inside each VMs running under the host and has also simplified the Backup and recovery configurations since they are directly performed using the Vembu BDR Server Console.

Fig(b): Agentless Hyper-V backups
Most importantly it helps you manage (backup, recovery, storage and reporting) all the servers of VMware and Hyper-V via a single window without you having to hop multiple pages.
High Availability with an RPO and RTO of less than 15 mins:
By providing Near CDP(Continuous Data Protection) with an RTO and RPO of less than 15 minutes, the recovery options with the Vembu VMBackup are quick enough to keep data centers up and running with minimal downtime with near zero data loss.
Fig (c):True 15 minute RTO and RPO with Vembu
Vembu’s Quick VM Recovery for image-based backups will help users to recover their physical and virtual infrastructure on VMware, Hyper-V or KVM platforms at an RTO of less than 15 minutes.
Well, if you are new to the terms RPO and RTO -here we go!
RTO implies the amount the data a business can afford to lose at the event of a disaster like that of a hardware failure or a malware attack in the form of ransomware attack.
Whereas, RPO explains the actual time between the disaster and the point at which you’ve had the previous backup.
Ensure consistent backups through Application-aware processing:
With the help of Microsoft’s Volume Shadow Copy Service(VSS), Vembu BDR server makes sure that consistent backups for Microsoft Applications like Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory and SQL with an additional option to truncate the transaction logs for MS Exchange and MS SQL as well.
To ensure consistency, it pauses or “quiesces” the disk I/O until the writers of the applications become stable and then process further backup.
Initially, the VSS request is triggered, followed by which a consistent backup for applications is initiated by Microsoft VSS before initiating a snapshot for that application.
Thus, there are no unfinished transactions that remain uncopied to the application database.
Advanced security using backup-level encryption:
The security of data is definitely in question when it is transferred over a network. Using this free edition, users can customize the security of their backup jobs by setting a customized password that enables AES 256 bit encryption setting that encrypts the backup data both in flight and at rest.
The users will be able to recover or delete the backups jobs only after providing their respective passwords of the backup jobs. It thus prevents accidental deletion of data by the users and enhances authority to the user’s data.
Changed Block Tracking for Efficient Storage Utility:
Post every successful backup, the changes that are made to the backup data of 3 virtual machines(not all) are tracked using the Changed Block Tracking(CBT) technology i.e, only the modified data blocks in the virtual machine disks are backed up, instead of entire VM Backup every time.
Fig(d): Changed Block Tracking for efficient storage utilization
Vembu VMBackup for VMware vSphere & vCenter updates successive incrementals to the backup storage by tracking just the modified blocks through VMware’s CBT without actually accessing the VMFS datastore, thus using limited storage space.
Similarly for Hyper-V, when the incremental backups are tracked as blocks and are processed using Vembu’s proprietary CBT(Changed Block Tracking).
Recover virtual setups instantly using Quick VM recovery on VMware/Hyper-V:
Performing instant recovery at the time of an unexpected disaster is definitely one of the most needed features. Even better if it’s capable of recovering instantly on either VMware or Hyper-V directly from the backup storage repository. Configuring recovery with this feature will ensure that recovery occurs with minimal downtime. Eventually, this will make sure that there hardly occurs data loss. Moreover, the changes that are made during the quick boot session are also tracked and stored in the backup repository that might be used at times of permanent recovery., can also be backed up during the successive backup schedules.
Disk Management Mount:
This is yet another interesting functionality of Vembu, that helps the users to recover the data from the disks of the virtual machines that absolutely saves a lot of time. If you are wondering how the disks of the backed up virtual machines get mounted on the disk management of the local Vembu BDR server and lets the user access the files and folders that are residing in it. This recovery feature that’s available in the Vembu VMBackup for VMware and Hyper-V becomes very efficient as it hardly takes seconds to get restored.
Save storage space with In-built compression:
The backup data is compressed and stored on the server, thereby decreasing the traffic and saving up the time that is taken to transfer the data from the client to the server. Most importantly, the space that the size of data would occupy is comparatively less than the complete size of the data would occupy on the backup server without compression.
Manage a heterogeneous storage environment:
Vembu VMBackup for VMware and Hyper-V supports multiple storage devices of different file systems be it local drives, NAS, SAN, Tape etc., with an additional flexibility of having these devices pooled into multiple storage pools as well. So even if users run out of space on their storage devices, they just need to add a new storage volume/device to the existing storage pool(s) to make sure that the backup jobs are successfully stored on the backup storage targets.
Backup Unlimited VMs with absolutely no license:
You can just configure multiple backup and restore jobs, with no feature restriction for 3 VMs without the need of purchasing any license. So, if you are a Small business and you don’t have a Backup and DR plan in place, you don’t have to worry. This complete free edition will be the right fit for your business.
