As the world travels towards the sphere of new technologies, we experience comfort; but there is actually a darker side that is hidden which makes us vulnerable. How? If this is your mind voice then I believe this article will help you.
The count of data grows when technologies get to advance, these data here may contain both private and public details. The public data is normal and can be accessed by anyone, not of much importance is required for it, but when it comes to private data, what would be your move?
Information is money and that information is nothing but a collection of data. To secure data many have moved towards Backup. Now, My question is, what is the use of backing up a data when it can’t be accessed at times of necessity.
Recovery is the game-changer here. When you are able to recover your data without any loss then you are on a safer side. This is a normal scenario that we are actually looking at but what if a disaster strikes and you need to have a clear continuity of your business without any loss; these types of disasters are termed as “Business Disasters”.
Business disasters can be a natural, technical or physical one. When a disaster strikes it actually breaks the continuity chain and availability of the business. This leads you in a higher risk probability. The term disaster recovery got its fame in reference to the times of disaster. Thus I would stress everyone to have a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) for a better business continuity.
Steps to overcome disaster:
1. Pre-plan and be prepared:
Planning is very important before we encounter any type of issue; So prepare a disaster recovery plan as per your business requirement. Generally, the DR plan is designed based on the following considerations: a) The traces of disasters that struck before, b) The severity and importance of data that helps to keep your business alive.
Generally, DR is categorized into two types they are:
- Offsite DR– The location where you replicate all your backed up data away from your production site
- Cloud DR– The backed up data is replicated to a cloud storage and you can recover it at any time
Thus, creating a best DR plan will actually help you to save your business.
2. Regular Backup process check:
Testing your backup process is important before planning for disaster recovery. Only when a proper backup is done, a proper recovery can be ensured. At times of disaster, there should not be any confusions, thus it is better to verify if the backed up data is recoverable by conducting backup checks at regular intervals of time.
3. Frequent DR- exercise:
Having a DR plan alone doesn’t ensure a complete business continuity. To assure a better business continuity, you have to test your DR plan regularly. Just like an emergency exercise carried out during the time of war or insurgency, the DR test should also be conducted to note the speed and agility of your DR plan and also you can personally rate your DR plan and make necessary changes.
4. Awareness among Staffs:
Basically, major disaster recovery issues are caused by human errors. It would be best to assign a separate team or a group to handle all backup and disaster-related stuff. This core team will have a better understanding of what disaster is, and also know when to trigger the DR plan. It is the sole responsibility of the team to educate and create awareness among other staffs on how to handle critical situations.
5. Timely Upgradation:
As we all know there is nothing called as perfect DR plan. So, it is important to have a check on your DR plan and update it at regular intervals of time, because the outdated plans can also put you under risks.
All the above-mentioned points would help you build a better DR plan.
There are many backup software vendors who offer a good DR platform, but the utilization of it depends on the IT admin. So think twice before you finalize your DR plan, because only that can ensure a proper business continuity.
