This section comprises of terminologies you must know before configuring a backup job.
Virtual Machine
- A virtual machine is similar to a physical machine and runs Operating System (OS) and several other applications. Virtual machines are easier to use and more secure.
Important files in a VM
- A VM will consist of several files that are required for its functionality. These files will be stored in the virtual machines directory. Some of the important files are mentioned below
- Virtual Disk
- Virtual Machine Configuration File (.vmx)
- Virtual Machine Data Disk (.vmdk)
- Virtual Machine snapshot file (.vmss)
- Virtual Machine log file(.log)
- Virtual Volumes utilize the communication between Vembu BDR backup server and the storage (NAS, SAN) for VM control. Let me list the considerations you must keep in mind -
- Analyze the virtual volume performance as it may be crucial in your VM functioning.
- Do not migrate the virtual volume storage
- Ensure high bandwidth between the ESXi host (VMware) and Vembu BDR backup server
- Monitor the workload continuously.
- Enable Snapshot functionality. Its performance may vary depending on your resources.
