Application Aware
Hardware failures, software bugs, human errors, and natural disasters can all cause your business-critical services or even the entire datacenter to go down.
BDRSuite for Hyper-V offers a powerful method for recovering from such failures. The Hyper-V VM replication feature can create and maintain exact copies (replicas) of source Hyper-V VMs on a target host. The replicas are simply powered off VMs that do not require any compute resources. In the event of a disaster, you can simply failover to the replicas for near-instant recovery.
Application-aware Replication for your Hyper-V VM’s
When backing up or replicating a VM that runs Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, SQL Server, or any other application/database, it is critical to ensure that the data inside those backups is consistent. This is significant because some data is kept in memory and some transactions may be incomplete when the VM backup is performed. Such backups would be crash-consistent if no actions were taken to flush memory and I/O operations, which is equivalent to unplugging the server and then powering it back on. Of course, most modern applications and databases have mechanisms for recovering from such a state, but in most cases, you’d have to waste time on manual restore operations and risk losing data.
The application awareness feature in BDRSuite for Hyper-V ensures that your application and database data are consistent. BDRSuite relies on the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) service running inside VMs to perform consistent backups and replicas of Windows-based VMware and Hyper-V VMs.
When you enable the application-awareness feature, your backups and replicas will contain consistent application and database data without requiring any additional configuration steps. As a result, you can recover not only VMs but also Microsoft Exchange objects (such as emails) and Active Directory objects (such as users) directly from a compressed backup repository.
