VMware Backup – Network Transport Mode
Vembu VMBackup uses VMware transport modes to backup and replicate virtual machines running on an ESXi host or vCenter server. The automatic transport mode selection is based on VM configured for backup/replication. NBD transport mode (Network Block Device) is chosen as a fallback when other modes are unavailable, whereas the ESX/ESXi server reads data from storage and sends it to the backup server over LAN.
How it works
Vembu VMBackup supports backup and replication of virtual machines that resides on ESXi hosts using VMware VADP. Network transport mode is of two types: NBD (Network Block Device) or NBDSSL (Encrypted NBD). NBD backs up virtual machines over LAN whereas NBDSSL encrypts data transferred over TCP with SSL encryption.Network transport mode offers following advantages:
- The ESX/ESXi host can use any storage device: including local storage or remote-mounted NAS
- When virtual machines and the backup proxy are on a private network, customers can choose unencrypted data transfer
NBD Support by Vembu:
- Vembu BDR server should be deployed in a physical machine or in virtual machine that resides over the LAN
- The backup transfer speed depends on LAN traffic and the size of the virtual disks being backed up
