System Requirements - Vembu BDR Backup Server
This section explains the requirement for Vembu BDR backup server installation so that you have a hassle-free experience. The requirements are split into various sections.
Note: The system requirements are the same for Vembu BDR backup server and Vembu OffsiteDR server
The recommended Vembu BDR backup server configuration is Octa Core Processor and 16 GB RAM
Requirements
RAM and CPU requirement
- Vembu BDR backup server consumes RAM and CPU during the backup or replication process. To achieve optimal performance provide enough RAM and CPU resource. The recommended Vembu BDR backup server configuration is 8 CPU cores (physical or virtual) and 16 GB RAM. You may run 8 backups concurrently if you have configured 4 GB RAM. Jobs include running backup and replication jobs.
The minimum recommendation is 4 CPU cores and 8 GB RAM
- Normally, 4 GB RAM will be utilized to run the Vembu BDR backup server and database services.
- If only one backup job is active, then it will use the remaining memory (approx. 4 GB RAM).
- If two concurrent backups are active, then each backup job will use approx. 2 GB RAM.
- The memory utilization will be divided based on active concurrent backup jobs.
- To avoid significant CPU usage during active backup progress, Vembu BDR backup server machine should be assigned with enough vCPUs or cores.
- Normally, one vCPU or core is enough to handle 8 concurrent backup jobs activity (such as read/write).
Note: The memory and CPU utilization are the same for the Vembu BDR backup server (Windows & Ubuntu) deployed in physical and virtual environments.
Operating system
The Vembu BDR backup server requires Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 or later.
The latest supported version of Windows OS is always recommended (currently Microsoft Windows 2019 - Standard, Datacenter, and Essential).
Vembu BDR backup server requirement
- The installation location consists of many application files such as conf files, exe files, bin files, and apache files. The default installation path for Vembu BDR backup server is C:\Program Files\Vembu\Vembu BDR.
We recommend installing Vembu BDR backup server in the default installation location. This is the recommended typical installation location.
- For Vembu BDR to install, at least 1.2 GB of free space must be available in the installation location.
- To configure the backup repository, you must complete the Vembu BDR server installation and login to Web GUI. Once you log in to Web GUI, you can configure the backup repository.
We recommend you to configure a storage volume as the backup repository which has at least 10 GB of free space.
PostgreSQL requirement
We recommend choosing a storage drive for PostgreSQL configuration that has a minimum of 10 GB of free space.
We do not recommend selecting C:/ drive as the storage location for PostgreSQL. Select a drive that is fast and resilient.
- When you install Vembu BDR backup server, you must configure the internal database storage location (PostgreSQL). During the installation, by default, the installer will select the drive based on the maximum space available, however, you can select a drive as per your requirement. When you select a drive as the storage, its total size and free size will be displayed adjacently. The disk you are choosing for the storing PostgreSQL must have a minimum of 10 GB free storage space, if the drivers are less then 10 GB, they won't be listed during the installation.
- Make sure you have 10% free space available in the DB metadata storage target. For example, if you want to backup VMs with 2TB used data, after storage reduction, approximately 1TB data will be stored at storage targets. In this scenario, approximately 100GB free space would be required to store the metadata files.
We recommend to configure different locations for backup repository and database (PostgreSQL).
