Installing Vembu BDR Backup Server Installation - Best Practices

We recommend you to install Vembu BDR backup server in a physical machine in Windows environment.
Guidelines
- Check the version number before you proceed to install. Make sure the Vembu BDR backup server is always in the latest version. Read the Software Update Guide to upgrade to the latest version. Follow the hierarchy mentioned in the update guide to upgrade existing Vembu BDR Suite.
- Read the Release Notes completely to find out the new features that have been added in the latest version, along with the bug fixes that have been squashed.
- Know your system configurations well before you proceed with the installation. Read the System Requirements section to find out the versions Vembu BDR backup server supports.
We recommend you to pause or stop all other processes that are running before you install Vembu BDR backup server. You might also consider disabling services which may restart the system before installing or updating.
- Do not make any changes during the installation. Wait for the installation to complete.
- Verify if the drivers(ODBC) installed for the devices are updated.
- Always run the installer with administrative privileges.
We recommend you to read the Vembu BDR License Agreement completely.
- Make sure you monitor the disk usage and disk space for the drive in which you install Vembu BDR backup server.
- If you are a local user do not change any settings during the installation, just click Next in all the windows during the installation and complete installing the backup server. If you are an administrator (Advanced user), select User Account option and install the backup server as per your requirement.
- Ensure the account in which you are installing the backup server has enough privileges. The user name should be in the DOMAIN\USERNAME format.
- Make sure the ports (Web Server, UI, Backup) you are going to configure are available. Else you can't proceed with the installation.
- The above mentioned guidelines apply for Vembu OffsiteDR also.
We do not recommend to change the port number unless necessary.
- Ensure the following are installed post the installation: PostgreSQL, ODBC Drivers, Web Server, Visual C++. In case you select the "Start Vembu BDR application" option at the last step of the installation, a pop-up window which notifies you that Vembu BDR has started will be displayed.
- If you have selected "Open the Vembu BDR Web-Console" option, you will be re-directed to the 'Sign into Vembu BDR' page.
- Check the following:
- If the shortcut icon is created in the desktop and tray.
- If VembuBDR is created in the services page (services.msc)
- If VembuBDR WebServer service is running.
- Select your corresponding time zone only. The backup/replication reports will be generated based on the configured time zone only.
We recommend using machineName.domainName as the Vembu BDR ID..
- Use the following for Vembu BDR ID: [ A-Z][a-z][0-9][ - _ .] Your ID must not start or end with special characters and it must be between 1-50 characters in length.
We recommend to use the default login credentials unless you are an advanced user
- The default login credentials is - admin/admin. If you have forgotten the password, you must reset the password by stopping the VembuBDR application, login to PostgreSQL database and make the necessary changes, this is the reason why we recommend using default login credentials.
- The reason we recommend installing Vembu BDR backup server in a Windows environment is because some of options are not available in Linux environment. The options that are not available are -
- You cannot configure - Hyper-V Backup & Windows Image Backup
- In the restore options with the respective plugins
- VMware - Disk Image Mount option is not available
- Hyper-V - Live Recovery to Hyper-V server & Disk Management Mount option is not available
- Windows Image - Disk/Partition & Disk Management Mount option is not available
